Playing the Wii

mii_chuck_norris.jpgI’ve never been a big “gamer” - but I have recently had the opportunity to play the Nintendo Wii Game System, and I must say I am rather impressed.  Sure, I’ve played my share of Pong, Combat, Pitfall, Tecmo Bowl, Mario Bros. and the like.  However, the Wii is slightly different in that it is physically demanding - for a video game.  Even though video games have been considered counterproductive, the Wii has engaged the user in not just hand-eye coordination, but physically standing up, moving around, being active.  I see this as a potential benefit for those who are addicted to gaming and are experiencing negative health issues because of it.  I applaud Nintendo for bringing a more physical aspect to complement the mental.  What do you think?

New editors

jeremyfrombenton.com is now a team project with the addition of my friend Ben as an editor. I have other friends that will be assisting me in the future as well. You may not enjoy their contributions as much as you do mine, but pretend that you do. Under the title will be the name of the person who published the post. Enjoy.

Chuck Bartowski

chucklogo-small.jpg Chuck is an action-comedy that is a blend of The Office and Alias. Watch it when it returns or download it or watch it online.

(I don’t want to say too much for fear that They might terminate another great TV show.)

Fitness resources on the internets

Crossfit is an excellent cross-training website that provides a wealth of fitness information including a workout of the day. Many of the workouts will kick your butt.

John Stone is a guy that transformed his physique in only a few months by a combination of healthy meal planning , cardio workouts, and weight training. His story is very motivating. There is a plethora of sites out there that give stories that are too good to be true, but I believe his story is legit.

If you supplement your diet with protein shakes, I recommend At Large Nutrition.

I’m still cursed

I knew this would happen, it was bound to. I fall in love with a show, tell my friends and family about a show, post favorable comments on my blog about a show, and look where it gets me- every time! The braniacs at NBC have decided to end  “Journeyman“. A combination of me loving the show, mediocre ratings, and the writer’s strike are to blame. The 13 episode freshman series will end it’s first year with episodes at 10E/9C on December 17th and 19th . Kevin Falls, producer of “Journeyman”,  says die-hard fans like myself will get closure with many questions being answered by the end of the 13 episodes, but adds that if the show is picked up next year, there will sufficient plot left to do a second season. Yeah, right. I am done talking about it.

What is your favorite video game EVER?

Since I am in the largest video game purchasing demographic, I am curious as to what your favorite video game ever is. Don’t be ashamed if it’s an oldie like Pong or Pac-Man. You can optionally expound on why. Here, I’ll go first: Metroid: Zero Mission on the GBA. It’s my favorite because it is the best game ever IMO. Metroid is the best series ever IMO. Thanks to a young friend of mine for giving it to me. By the way, I can’t wait to play my brother-in-law’s Wii. He and my sister-in-law were sore from playing the sports games and he’s a P.E. teacher. They better suck it up and get in shape.

Does applause belong in a worship service?

My friend Tim wrote this in 2005, but I like to review it from time to time. Be sure to read some of the comments after the post on his site, especially here.

When we moved to Tennesee late last year, we immediately tackled the task of finding a church.

Not an easy project, by any means. The church we came from was, for the most part, God-centered and God-honoring in its worship (and I include preaching as part of worship, simply because the preaching of the Word of God is part of worship. Too many people only equate worship with music).

As we visited Baptist churches in the area, one component of the worship services often stood out to me – the number of congregations where applause is common.

I discovered that in the typical Southern Baptist church, congregations applaud for the special music. They applaud for the choir. They sometimes applaud for the offertory. I often wondered why they didn’t applaud for prayers and for the sermon, but maybe it’s because the prayers and the sermons just weren’t good enough to warrant an ovation.

Narrowing down the list of churches we were interested in joining became a fairly simple task, because as soon as I heard applause in a worship service, I scratched that church off my list. A church’s insistence on clapping revealed something very telling to me about its view of worship. It revealed that the church considered worship to be something that should be entertaining for us – that the people on the platform were putting on a show, and the congregation was the audience.

The sky is not falling

strike.JPGDue to the Hollywood writer’s strike, many shows have shortened their typical season from about 23 episodes to about a dozen episodes. Many of the popular shows like ‘The Office’ and ‘Heroes’ have already wrapped up their seasons for the television year. Other shows like ‘24′ and ‘Lost’ will likely have to shorten their seasons as well. For example, ‘Lost’ will begin later so that it runs consecutively to end during May sweeps. It’s not the end of the world for me, but I really enjoy a few shows that are on now. I will mainly miss ‘Journeyman’, ‘Lost’, and ‘The Office’, in that order. All you girly men will probably miss those two medical shows (sarcasm). As far as the reality stuff, not so much. I may start watching some great shows from the past like ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’, ‘Hill Street Blues’, or ‘Dark Shadows’ (semi-sarcasm). If you need to get caught up on any shows, check out this how-to.

So, I axe you all, what will you miss most?
