SNES online gaming

So, you want to try the online gaming with your friends, but you’re not into the Halo or the WoW type gaming (i.e. your rig is too slow). Oh, and you love the classic, retro games systems such as the Super Nintendo. I hear ya’, I’m pickin’ up what your puttin’ down. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Get you some high-speed internets.
  2. Find your keyboard or game controller.
  3. Download and install ZSNES_1.42 from the official ZSNES page or from Zophar’s Domain. Extract ZSNES into a folder named ZSNES. Place this folder somewhere in your documents that you’ll be able to find later. Open ZSNES and go to Config and Input; this will setup your controller buttons.
  4. Download some SNES R0Ms from here and then Load a R0M in ZSNES by going to Load and then navigate to where you saved your R0Ms.
  5. Download and install zbattle. from the official zbattle page. Run zbattle and setup the required information (Player name, ZSNES and R0M directory locations).
  6. Setup your router (if necessary): Access your router’s configuration page. This is usually done by typing http://192.168.1.1 in your browser. In the port forwarding section of the router configuration page, you need to forward UDP port 7845 (for ZSNES) and TCP port 4000 (for zbattle.net downloading) to your LAN IP (usually 192.168.1.something). For more information on how this is done, please consult your router manual. If you are using a firewall you need to allow incoming/outgoing UDP port 7845 (for ZSNES), outgoing TCP port 4398 (to connect to the zbattle.net server), and incoming TCP port 4000 (for zbattle.net downloading). Usually once you start online play for the first time, Windows Firewall will ask you for permission to allow these programs to access the net- say yes.
  7. Visit the official zbattle tutorial for detailed setup information.

Notes: Use ZSNES 1.42 if possible. Use a wired internet connection rather than wireless for optimum connectivity. Each player must have the exact same R0M (download it from the same source or send the other person the R0M through email, messaging, etc.). When in online play, type t to chat with the other person or use a voice PC to PC messaging program like Google Talk so you can talk smack with your foe.
